Ven. Rambukana Siddhartha Thero, who devoted decades to nurturing Sri Lanka’s fine tradition of song, passed away recently. As the country mourned, a photo showing a huge crowd gathered in the open began circulating on social media, said to show the people who came to pay their last respects.

We set out to separate fact from fiction.

    Fact Check:

Ven. Rambukana Siddhartha Thero passed away at Sri Jayewardenepura Hospital on August 18, 2026. His cremation was held with state patronage on August 21, 2026, at the Sri Saranankara Stadium in Dehiwala, drawing the Maha Sangha, leading political figures, artistes and large crowds who came to pay their final respects.

Several details in the viral photo did not add up. It showed a stage-shaped structure quite unlike the funeral pyre that was actually built, a large stupa in the distance of a kind not seen around Colombo, a backdrop that was not the Sri Saranankara Stadium, and people who appeared again and again in different parts of the same crowd. Those inconsistencies led us to check the mainstream media coverage.

Mainstream outlets had covered the funeral and cremation live. A review of that footage showed no scene matching the photo circulated on social media of the crowd who came to pay their respects. More footage from the cremation ceremony is available here and here.

Drone footage shows the actual crowd.

Journalists confirmed no such crowd attended.

We also contacted several journalists who covered the event. They confirmed that no crowd of the size shown on social media had attended Ven. Rambukana Siddhartha Thero’s cremation and that the location in the image was not the Sri Saranankara Stadium in Dehiwala.

The photo was created using AI.

Because no scene matching the circulated photo appeared in any official coverage of the cremation, and given the unnatural qualities visible in the image, we ran it through several AI-content detection tools. They found that the photo had been generated using Artificial Intelligence.

    Conclusion:

Our fact-check finds that the photo circulating on social media, said to show a vast outdoor crowd paying final respects to the late Ven. Rambukana Siddhartha Thero, was generated using Artificial Intelligence. His funeral was held under state patronage and drew the Maha Sangha, political leaders, artistes and large crowds.

However, the mainstream live coverage, drone footage of the actual event, and the journalists who reported from the scene all confirmed that nothing resembling the stadium-filling multitude in the viral image ever took place. The location shown was not the Sri Saranankara Stadium, and AI-detection tools confirmed the picture was synthetic.
