Quick weight-loss “secrets” built on kitchen ingredients spread easily on social media, especially among people looking for a simple fix for belly fat. A video shared on social media claimed that a drink made with cinnamon, ginger, lemon and turmeric, taken five days a week, could cut 3 kg of body weight in a single week and easily reduce fat around the waist and belly. We checked what the evidence says. Here is the post that carried the claim.

The video was uploaded on October 5, 2026, claiming that drinking this beverage five days a week could cut 3 kg of body weight in one week and easily reduce belly and waist fat.

    Fact-Check:

Studies on ginger, turmeric, and cinnamon show only small, low-quality effects

Some studies have looked at the effect of ginger, cinnamon, and turmeric on body weight. For example, meta-analyses on ginger reported small reductions in body weight or waist circumference, but the quality of evidence in those studies was described as low or very low.

Similarly, statistical reviews (meta-analyses) on turmeric and cinnamon recorded small reductions in body weight and waist circumference. However, these did not prove that drinking this beverage causes such an effect.

Lemon water helps hydration but does not detoxify

Lemon can make plain water tastier and so help a person drink enough water. It also provides a little vitamin C. That is useful, but detoxification is an entirely different matter. Frequently drinking acidic lemon water can also irritate the stomach of people with acid reflux or gastritis and, over time, can damage tooth enamel.

No reliable medical evidence shows the drink melts belly fat

We found no reliable medical evidence that drinking a beverage made with these ingredients five days a week easily melts belly fat.

A healthy diet, physical activity, enough sleep, and long-term lifestyle changes are what matter most for weight loss. The CDC says gradual weight loss of about 0.45 to 0.9 kg a week is easier to maintain over the long term.

Choosing a sugar-free, low-calorie drink instead of tea or coffee with sugar may help reduce total calorie intake. But that is not evidence that this herbal drink “melts fat”.

Dr. L. P. A. Karunathilaka, former Senior Lecturer, Institute of Indigenous Medicine, University of Colombo, said the claimed effects are not scientifically established

To get clarity on the claim, we contacted Dr. L. P. A. Karunathilaka, a former Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Indigenous Medicine, University of Colombo. He said all these herbs have various medicinal properties and may act differently in each person’s body and in different bodily conditions. He added that, judged by genuine Ayurvedic knowledge, this mixture and the effects claimed for it are not scientifically confirmed or justifiable.

Dr. Karunathilaka also pointed out that, depending on a person’s body constitution, using this mixture can sometimes cause adverse effects, particularly in the digestive tract and other parts of the body.

    Conclusion:

The claim that drinking a beverage made with cinnamon, ginger, lemon, and turmeric five days a week can cut 3 kg of body weight in one week and easily reduce waist and belly fat is misleading. Ingredients such as ginger, turmeric and cinnamon have been studied in relation to body weight, but there is not enough scientific evidence that a drink combining all four quickly reduces weight or melts belly fat.

Dr. L. P. A. Karunathilaka’s views and the research reports we reviewed, including meta-analyses and CDC guidance, also indicate that the drink may cause side effects in some people.
