In the age of social media, captivating videos often take the internet by storm, leaving viewers in awe and sparking curiosity. Recently, a TikTok video has been making waves, claiming to showcase a restaurant in China employing a humanoid waitress. As the video gained traction, so did the skepticism surrounding its authenticity.
In this fact-check article, we delve into the viral footage, separating fact from fiction to uncover the truth behind the intriguing claim.
Social Media Claim
A video showing a woman serving food to customers with robotic-like movements is going viral on social media. The video claims that a Chinese restaurant uses a robot as a waitress.
The video went viral on X and Facebook also.
Fact-Check
During our investigation, we obtained information about the viral video from the website Business Insider. According to the article, the person in question is not a humanoid robot but a dancer, and the restaurant owner is featured in the clip.
Additionally, the news agency South China Morning Post has released a video clarifying that the individual is a professional dancer. The video showcases her impressive footwork while she competes in dance competitions.
We also found a video of her being interviewed by a Chinese television outlet during a dance competition.
While the statement regarding the viral video may not be accurate, China’s advanced technological advancements and its plan to build humanoid robots that resemble humans make this statement more believable and logical. Furthermore, in 2016, China introduced “Jia Jia,” the country’s first humanoid robot, widely recognized for its remarkable human-like qualities (source: Daily Mail).
Summary
The viral video claiming that a restaurant in China uses humanoid robot waitresses that resemble humans is misleading. However, the woman in the video is the restaurant owner, a professional street dancer, not an actual robot.
