When former State Minister Shantha Bandara’s son was arrested and then released over the alleged robbery of Rs. 20 million from a Chinese national, the case set social media talking. Soon a clip spread showing Bandara in tears, captioned as his breakdown over his son’s arrest, with a satirical political spin. We investigated. Here is what we found.

The posts claimed Bandara wept while addressing the media, saying: “Because of my son’s actions, my little daughter isn’t eating.”

Fact-Check
Shantha Bandara’s Son Was Arrested Over a Rs. 20 million Robbery
Former State Minister Shantha Bandara’s 21-year-old son, Anuda Janadith Bandara, was arrested by police on July 21, 2026, along with several other suspects, in connection with the robbery of Rs. 20 million in cash being transported in a vehicle belonging to a Chinese national. Five suspects, including the former minister’s son, were taken into custody and remanded. When the case was called before the Fort Magistrate’s Court on July 27, 2026, all five were ordered released on personal bail of Rs. 500,000 each. More details are available here and here.
The Tearful Video Dates Back to 2022 Aragalaya, Not the Arrest
We examined whether the photo of a tearful, eyes-shut Shantha Bandara was his reaction to his son’s arrest but found no evidence he ever made such a statement or gave any media interview to that effect. His actual statement to the press appears below.
We also traced the origin of the tearful clip and found it was not footage from a recent press conference. It dates back to the 2022 economic crisis, when protesters surrounded Shantha Bandara’s home. Speaking to the media afterward, an emotional Bandara said the intense fear caused by the siege had made his young daughter refuse to eat that day, and he was seen shedding tears as he said it.

Conclusion
Shantha Bandara’s son was indeed arrested over an Rs. 20 million robbery and later released on bail. But Bandara never held a tearful media briefing claiming his young daughter had stopped eating because of his son’s arrest.
That emotional statement was made back in 2022, during the “Aragalaya” protests, when demonstrators surrounded his home and, he said, frightened his daughter into refusing food. The old footage has since been pulled out of context, stitched to the recent arrest, and circulated with a satirical political spin. The claim is therefore false.
